Adventure 2012: Private View

On Saturday afternoon we had the opening and private view of the Adventure art exhibition.

The exhibition was officially opened by Steve Alliston representing the Jubilee Initiative, the collection of charities to which commission on sales will be donated. There was a great turn out for the private view, with many friends and family attending.

Adventure is open until 22nd December. We hope many of you will have a chance to stop by and have a look. We will post more pictures of the work in coming days.

Finally, from all of the other artists: a big “Thank You” to Sheri. Without her vision, enthusiasm and sheer hard work, this exhibition would never have happened.

Nearly all the artists. From left to right: Sheri Gee, Richard Wombell, Caryl Mann, Robert Meldrum, Kat Ferguson, Charlene Yates, Rebeka Lord, Fran Elliott, Alan Mathers, Chris West, Jenny Harvey. Missing: Jill Waldock and Lynn Warren.

Richard - Painting of Kat

Back in the spring Kat, one of our London Road Group, volunteered to sit for one of our Saturday life drawing sessions. I liked the pose so worked it up into a finished picture. Oil on canvas, 60cmx80cm.

Richard - Winter Birches 2

I've been a bit remiss in posting work over recent months. With our exhibition fast approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to start posting pictures of some of the new work I'll be showing. This first is a set of pictures inspired by the trees in winter on Ashdown Forest.

Sheri - New beginnings

I've been painting and drawing horses for a while and have been pretty much out of my comfort zone. Not naturally a horse enthusiast, they've been a challenge which has been at times rewarding but at others much less so! So, back in the comfort zone, I'm working on a new portrait of my daughter, reclining. I've just spent a couple of hours on it so far, mapping it out, drawing in the bare bones of the composition to get the proportions right. Many more hours to go, but it's good to be starting something human!

There are a lot of difficult areas that aren't really explained properly in the sketch, but hopefully the lights and darks that come into the painting will answer any questions. This is oil on canvas, about a metre wide.

Richard - Recent Pictures

Like Sheri, I've not posted much here over the last couple of months. To make up, here are some recent pictures.

Sheri - latest portraits

A few times now I’ve been commissioned to do portraits as birthday presents. I always feel there should be a complete embargo on mentioning what I’m working on, publicly, or showing work in progress. I always fear that the recipient may find out, however random or unlikely that may be. So, what may look like a month of inactivity has actually been a period of solid painting. For the last month I’ve been hard at it, working on two portraits, brothers, as a surprise birthday present. Here are the finals - both oil on canvas, 10 x 8 inches, painted from supplied photos.

I've at last added the work from recent life drawing sessions to the other blog:

Michael: Reduction linocut, stage 6 and 7

Stage 6: Blue shadow for the wall that goes all the way across the picture.

Reduction linocut, stage 6

Stage 7: Spot the difference.

Reduction linocut, stage 7

As soon as I had printed all of stage 6, I realised I'd forgotten to put on all the blue that I needed. So stage 7 has just a bit more ink (nearer the top of the image).

Michael: Reduction linocut stages 4 and 5

Two stages for the price of one.

Stage 4 has just a slightly darker green at the bottom of the image.

Reduction linocut, stage 4

Stage 5 has a darker green over the rest of the picture.

Reduction linocut, stage 5

Can anyone identify the subject yet?

Michael: Reduction linocut, stage 3

Next layer has a gradient from blue-green down to yellow-green.

Michael: Linocut, stage 2

Another layer of colours; fingers crossed that they're not already too dark.

Michael: New print

Here's the first layer (though there's not much to see yet):

Linocut, stage 1

To get some variation in what will be beds of flowers, I inked the block in selected places, using different colours. (Which works well -- apart from when you've finished, you realise that you have five rollers to clean...)
